The Department of Gastroenterology and Liver provides specialist inpatient and outpatient services. We have general and sub-specialty gastroenterology clinics.

We can investigate symptoms or problems that might be arising from the gastrointestinal system such as with swallowing, abdominal pain, bleeding into the stool, iron deficiency, anaemia, abnormal bowel function, weight loss or abnormal liver function or imaging. We support patients with gastrointestinal disease including viral hepatitis, liver cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, coeliac disease, and bowel cancer screening on behalf of the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program.

Our multidisciplinary services include nurse-led assessment and treatment clinics, counselling and education, and diagnostic & therapeutic endoscopy (including gastroscopy, colonoscopy, ERCP, enteroscopy and endoscopic ultrasound). Non-invasive liver fibrosis assessments are also available using FibroScan® or Shear Wave Elastography, to assess the level of liver ‘stiffness’. These tests are quick and virtually painless, and the results are interpreted by our liver specialists.
