If you are having a gastrointestinal procedure in our department, feel free to ask clinical staff to explain what will happen to you – this is a very important part of providing your consent to us.

The information is provided as a general guide to help you, but there may be significant differences in the care provided to you. This would depend on factors such as your current state of health, medications you are on, and your age. It is our role to provide specific advice for you when you attend.

The risk and benefits of all procedure will be explained so that you can provide informed consent. All medical procedures can involve some unintended harms, and we need to review the health of an individual prior to the procedure to fully assess the risk. Patients may require sedation under the care of an anaesthetist to have a procedure, and this increases the risk of problems with the function of the breathing and blood circulation of the patient. Some patients will have clinical review in specialist anaesthetic clinics prior to the procedure to help with this.
